
Google DeepMind is an AI research laboratory focused on building artificial general intelligence. Founded in London in 2010 by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman, the company was acquired by Google in 2014 for approximately $660M. DeepMind pioneered breakthroughs including AlphaGo, the first program to defeat a world champion at Go, and AlphaFold, which solved the 50-year-old protein folding problem and has been used by over two million researchers worldwide. The lab remains headquartered in London with a large UK engineering presence and continues to push the boundaries of reinforcement learning, large language models, and scientific AI.

PhysicsX was founded in 2020 in London by Robin Tuluie and Jacomo Corbo, both veterans of elite motorsport engineering. Tuluie previously led R&D at the Mercedes and Renault (Alpine) Formula 1 teams and served as Vehicle Technology Director at Bentley, while Corbo co-founded QuantumBlack (later acquired by McKinsey) and worked as a Formula 1 chief race strategist. The company builds an AI-native simulation platform that embeds physics neural operators directly into engineering workflows, predicting how products will behave in seconds rather than the hours or days traditional simulation demands. PhysicsX serves aerospace and defence, semiconductors, automotive, materials, and energy customers, and has partnered with Siemens and NVIDIA on data centre power infrastructure. The company has raised more than $450M to date, including a $135M Series B led by Atomico in 2025 and a £225M Series C led by Temasek and M&G Investments in 2026.
CuspAI was founded in Cambridge in 2024 by Dr Chad Edwards and Professor Max Welling, the machine learning researcher who previously led Qualcomm's AI research in Europe. The company builds generative models that search for materials meeting a specified functional brief, then validates candidates in the lab, targeting semiconductors, clean energy and advanced manufacturing. In July 2026 it launched the AI Materials Foundry, a network of more than 45 partners including NVIDIA, Meta, Samsung, Hyundai Motor Group, Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron and Lam Research, pairing computational discovery with physical synthesis and exclusive dataset partnerships. The $450M Series B was co-led by Kleiner Perkins and NEA at a $2.6bn valuation, up from $520M nine months earlier, taking total funding past $580M across a 2024 seed and a 2025 Series A.
